Programs and Events for Families

A Nature New Year’s Eve Celebration                                             
December 31, 2014,  7:00 – 10:00 pm
Open to all ages, this relaxed evening includes nature crafts, activities, a snack buffet and cross country skiing and snowshoeing on a candlelit trail (snow conditions permitting, equipment provided by Quarry Hill). Alternate outdoor activities will be provided if snow conditions do not permit ski/snowshoe.
$12 per person (Immediate family maximum $48)
$10 per member (Immediate family maximum $40)

A Bat-tacular Full Moon Hike                                 
Friday January 2, 6:30 – 8:00
Join us around the fireplace for treats and the retelling of Batwings & the Curtain of Night. This wonderful old creation myth explores how the stars and moon came to be, and why, to this day, bats crowd together and hang upside down. Following our story we’ll head out for a moon-lit hike to the cave where we’ll search for hibernating bats.
$5/participant ($16 family maximum)
$4/Members ($12 family maximum)

Ski by Candlelight
January 30, 6:00—9:00 pm

Celebrate Minnesota’s sparkling season and beautiful winter landscape. Enjoy an evening skiing by candlelight and the glow of the moon. After a good ski, warm up in front of the Nature Center’s blazing fireplace or outdoor bonfire while refueling with cocoa and s’mores. Equipment is available on a first come first serve basis. All ages are welcome – equipment is available in youth and adult sizes. Event is dependent on snow and trail conditions. Call ahead - 328-3950.

Festival of Birds
February 8 from 1:30—3:30

Flock to Quarry Hill to spend an afternoon with the birds!Set a bird trap in hopes of catching and holding your very own bird.Then watch, learn, and take part in the bird banding process.Making guest appearances will be Quarry Hill’s very own Eastern Screech Owl and American Kestrel. Finally, make a bird feeder of your own to take home so you can continue bird watching throughout the winter!
$6.00/person Pre-registration requested.

Sundays at Quarry Hill

Sunday programs are open to the public; all ages are welcome to participate. All programs start at 1:30 pm and last approximately one hour. Due to space limitations, pre-registration is recommended for the cave tours.

Bird Sundays*
Experience the wonder of birds up close! We will talk about our bird related topic of the month and activities will typically include trapping, netting, banding, and releasing of birds.
Cave Sundays*
Find out about the history of Quarry Hill Park with a tour of our historic sandstone caves, carved in 1882. The cave is a short 10 minute walk from the Nature Center. There will be an optional hike after the cave tour to a featured site. Pre-registration is recommended for cave tours.
Critter Sundays*
Our focus will be on one or more of Quarry Hill's resident live animals. Learn what makes them special and if they are hungry, participant in animal feeding.
Nature Sundays*
Join us as we explore an outdoor nature topic that will include a hike or activity.
