Classes for Adults

Just because you are grown up doesn't mean you can't have fun at Quarry Hill! Join us for a great selection of class offerings. To ensure placement, pre-registration is recommended for all classes unless noted. To register for classes you may call Quarry Hill Nature Center (328-3950) or mail us the registration form and payment. Payment may be done with cash, check, or credit card. Friends members discount, when available, is listed with the class write-ups.

Introduction to Cross-country Skiing - Class will meet January 21 for registered participants.
January 7 or 21 from 8:30—10:00 am
Fee: $15 per person / $12 Friends Member
If you can walk, you can also cross-country ski! Become one of those adults who cheer on the next big snowstorm. Join us to learn the basics of classic cross-country skiing and become a healthier and happier Minnesotan. Cost
includes instruction and use of ski equipment during class.
Winter Tree ID
January 7 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm
$15 per person / $12 Friends Member
Advanced training for Minnesota Master Naturalists or any other tree loving adult.  This class will focus on characteristics that can be used to identify deciduous trees when leaves are not present. Lenticels, vascular bundle scars, bud scales, terminal growth scars, bark pattern, tree silhouettes, etc., will all become familiar as you hone you ability to identify our local trees in winter.  Come dressed for both indoor and outdoor work.
Snowshoeing 101 - Class has filled.
January 14 from 8:30 - 10:00 am
Fee: $15 per person / $12 Friends Member
If you can walk, you can snowshoe! Snowshoeing can be a great winter blues buster. Come learn a little snow history and then strap on a pair for some guided practice. Cost includes instruction and use of snowshoes. A minimum snow base of six inches is required for this class.
Candlelight Skiing - Class has been re-scheduled for Friday, January 27

A mile long portion of groomed trail will be illuminated by candles and waiting for you, along with a pair of skis, boots and poles.  Join other adults for an evening of skiing and socializing by the big stone fireplace.  S’more makings and beverages are included. Rental of equipment included.

Valentine's Day Ski/Snowshoe
February 10 OR February 11

What could be more romantic: candlelight, champagne, chocolate, a roaring fire, and skiing! A unique recipe for Valentine’s fun is in store at Quarry Hill Nature Center. Bring your sweetheart or come with friends for an enjoyable evening skiing or snowshoeing along a candlelit trial. Then warm up by the crackling fire where champagne will be served. A chocolate truffle or two will add a sweet finish to the night.  
Beekeeping for Beginners
Feb. 11 from 9 am - 4:30 pm
$40/adult ($35 members),  $18/child over 10 w/adult registration ($15 member)
Beekeeping is exciting and growing in popularity. You have to know what to look for and be on top of subtle changes which could indicate potential problems or signal hive management actions the beekeeper should take. While beekeeping itself can be hard work, the rewards are definitely worth the time. Not only do you get honey, but your bees pollinate local plants and better the environment as a whole! This class, specifically for beginners, will cover introduction to bees and beekeeping, equipment, disease and pest management, planting for honeybees, yearly management and how to produce a honey crop.  Participants will be given information on where to buy bees and equipment. An advanced bee keeping class will be offered in the fall.  Participants should pack a lunch.  Pre-registration required.
An Introduction to Falconry
February 18 from 1:30 —3:00 pm

Join licensed falconer Kirk Payne and Horus, an American kestrel, to learn about the ancient sport of falconry. Minnesota raptors will also be discussed as well as the basics of falconry.      
Start Your Own Backyard Sugar Bush 
March 3 from 1:30-3:00 pm
$15 per person / $12  Friends Member
Learn how to produce your own syrup for even a single maple or box elder tree. We’ll cover the basic equipment and techniques required to collect and process sap. Participants will have a chance to practice tapping a tree and sample some finished box elder syrup. 
Mississippi Eagle Watching Trip  
March 8 from 9:00 am—3:00 pm
$35 per person / $30 Friends Member
Large numbers of Bald Eagles are gathering along the Mississippi River east of Rochester this time of year.  Board the Quarry Hill Critter Coach with Quarry Hill naturalist, Kirk Payne, and go in search of these majestic birds.  Stop for lunch in the Wabasha area and visit the National Eagle Center.  Fee includes admission to the Eagle Center, participants will pay for their own lunch.
